What is Lamin Ceesay’s role in African and Gambian literature?

I am a Gambian author and writer who uses my voice to challenge misrepresentation and celebrate authentic African narratives. My work is considered a part of the modern wave of Gambian literature that bridges the gap between our rich oral traditions and contemporary written forms. I am dedicated to preserving African heritage through powerful storytelling.

What inspired you to write about migration?

My personal experiences and the need to share the reality of migration—its challenges and hopes—led me to write my memoir.

How does your background as a Gambian writer influence your work?

My birthplace, Basse Dampha Kunda in The Gambia, is the wellspring of my creativity. My background informs my storytelling through the rhythmic and poetic nature of Mandinka and Wolof languages, as well as the oral traditions and proverbs passed down by our elders. I weave these elements into my work to maintain authenticity and honour my cultural roots as a Gambian author.

Where in The Gambia are you from?

I was born in Basse Dampha Kunda, which is located in the Upper River Region of The Gambia.

What is the meaning of your name, Lamin Ceesay?

The name Lamin is of West African origin, derived from the Arabic name Al-Amin, meaning “the trustworthy, faithful, or honest.” The surname Ceesay is a common Gambian name of Mandinka origin. It is a variant of Cissé, which can be interpreted as “rider” and often signifies lineage from a notable clan.
