What Gives You Direction in Life? A Guide to Finding Your True North
When someone asks me what gives me direction in life, my first thought, as a modern human navigating a complex world, is simple: Google Maps. While that might be the humorous, modern answer for getting from point A to point B, the real question of finding our purpose and path is far more profound. This post is a reflection on the inner compass we all carry and how we find our way, both literally and figuratively.
The Digital Compass: From Point A to B
In our daily lives, tools like Google Maps have become essential. They simplify the complex, offering a clear path, estimated time of arrival, and even detours to avoid traffic. They provide a sense of control and clarity, turning an unknown journey into a manageable one. This reliance on a clear, external guide mirrors our human desire for a well-defined path in life. We crave certainty and a step-by-step plan, just like the directions on our screens.
Beyond the Map: Finding Your Inner Direction
Unlike a digital map, life’s most meaningful journeys don’t come with a clear-cut route. Our real direction comes from within—from our values, passions, and the stories we tell ourselves and others. For me, as a Gambian writer, my compass is deeply rooted in my heritage and personal experiences. The oral traditions passed down by our griots, the wisdom of my community, and the lessons learned from my immigrant journey all serve as my inner guide.
Storytelling, in particular, has been my way of mapping out my own life. By writing my own narrative, I can make sense of my path, celebrate the triumphs, and find meaning in the challenges. It’s a process of self-discovery that helps me define my purpose and stay true to my authentic self, no matter where I am in the world.
